What Does a Mental Health Technician Do?
A Mental Health Technician (MHT) in Nevada is a behavioral health paraprofessional who works under the supervision of licensed mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, or nurses. They provide direct care and support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges, assist with daily living activities, observe and document behaviors, help implement treatment plans, and may help with facilitation of the therapeutic activities and group sessions in inpatient or residential settings. MHTs are not authorized to diagnose mental health conditions, provide psychotherapy, or prescribe medication.
To become an MHT in Nevada, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, although some positions may prefer or require postsecondary coursework in psychology or a related field. On-the-job training and certifications such as CPR or crisis intervention are commonly required. Their scope of practice is defined by NRS 433.279 and related state regulations.
