What Does a School Counselor Do?
A School Counselor in Nevada is an educational professional trained to support students’ academic achievement, career development, and social-emotional well-being. They provide individual and group counseling, deliver classroom guidance lessons, and respond to crises. School counselors also coordinate student services and collaborate with teachers, families, and administrators to promote success. While they address mental health and behavioral concerns within the school setting, they do not diagnose mental disorders or prescribe medication.
To become licensed as a school counselor in Nevada, individuals must earn a master’s degree in school counseling or a related field through a state-approved counselor education program, and obtain supervised practicum and internship experience. Applicants must also pass the appropriate Praxis exam for school counselors. Their scope of practice is defined by NRS 391.293 and related regulations.
